The long winding story of a dining set

Posted by ming on April 7th, 2010

This whole story starts three months back at the end of last year. After Christmas is usually a great time to buy things since most stores have clearance sales. For once we didn’t have any plans to go anywhere. Our bid for the condo has been accepted so there isn’t much we can do as far as hunting for a home goes. Time to start looking at furniture to get some idea for the new place.

Our trip took us to a kitchenware store that also sells furniture, which shall remain nameless. (let’s just say it sounds like Great and Harold). I’ve always wanted a large table, while Michelle’s only requirement is that the table do not have any seams (ie, one large table top, no leafs). This narrows down our choices considerably.

After walking around the store, we found a discounted floor display of the table we’ve always liked. There is always a larger version of the same table on display, but that one is way too big. This is the first time we have seen the smaller version and the size would work for us. The floor sample looks to be in decent shape. The sales lady said that the table was used in their window display so no one really have access to it. The discount was only okay, not in the “we must grab it now” range. We just let the idea sit in the back of our minds. If someone grabs it before we leave the store, so be it.

After wandering around the store some more, we found three floor sample chairs for the table. Each was discounted 20%, not a huge amount. But considering it is discount x 3, the total discount begins to add up.

The sales lady was eager to close the sale. Our only concern is that we have no idea when we will get our place. There is absolutely nowhere to put it in our apt. It turns out the store has a storage policy where you can buy something and they can store it for your for 3 months free of charge. Now that sealed the deal. We just bought a table and three chairs! Yes, three chairs.

Over the next few weeks we looked around for a floor sample for the bench. With no luck, we added a bench at clearance price to our order and waited for our condo to close.

About a month later, the sales lady called me to ask if I can set a delivery date, so they can move the table and chairs to their central warehouse. By then I knew we’ll close around Jan 12. I am guessing the home upgrades will take about a month, so I went ahead and booked a delivery date for Feb 22.

As we were handed the keys a week late and constructions began, it doesn’t look like we’ll make the delivery. It looks like we’ll be late a week. I called and pushed the delivery back to March 6. “No problem” she said.

On March 4, I get a frantic call from the saleslady. “We can’t find the table”. “I am sure it is somewhere, we have never lost anything before. It is probably at our main warehouse in Northern California. But we don’t be able to verify until Monday. So unless you want just your chair and bench, we have to move the delivery back”.

Okkkkaaayy. How do you lose a table that is almost 7 ft long?

On Monday I get another frantic call. “The warehouse is actually closed on Monday, I’ll update you tomorrow.”

On Tuesday the call came. “We can’t find your table. We’ll replace it with a new table. BUT”

I think to myself “But? BUT?! what now?”

“But the table is back-ordered, we won’t be able to get any stock until March 25. How about we book a delivery date for the rest of the things and then just add the table once we have it in stock.”

What else can I say? “Book the delivery for the 27th then.”

Luckily this store’s website is pretty decent and lets you check on stock situation online. On the 24th I noticed the table is in stock again. I called and have them add the table to my order. Done.

On March 25, I get a call confirming my delivery time and date. Two hours later I get another frantic call. “Bad news from the warehouse. When they went to move your chair, the warehouse people broke one. It is way beyond repair. We’ll have to order you a new one, but it won’t get in Apr 1. What do you want to do about the delivery?”

I decided to get the table, 2 chairs and bench on 27th as planned and just go pick up the chair myself.

By this time Michelle is fed up with the whole thing and wants to call the whole thing off. I had to calm her down. I like the table and I certainly don’t want to go hunting for a new table again.

On the 27th, the table, chair and bench actually showed up, ON TIME. No drama there, which I am almost surprised.

On Apr 3rd, was able pick up the last chair with no drama.

By waiting for almost a month, my table and one chair got “upgraded” to a new one. I am still deciding if it is all worth it.

Whole set
Yes, we only have three chairs. Guests will have to play musical chairs. Only the strong will survive.

Sneaking away to the Olympics

Posted by ming on March 4th, 2010

“The Today Show, broadcasting live from Grouse Mountain in Vancouver…” the TV blared. Matt, Meredith, Al and Ann sits in the ski lodge in Grouse mountain, talking about the upcoming opening ceremony. We take occasional peeks at the TV while gathering things up to go to work.

Michelle : “Mom and Angela went to the taping, I wonder if they will be on TV. Can’t believe we are missing the Olympics, in my own backyard”.

Me : “I told you, we have all kinds of contractors lined up. Bad timing for us.” I whipped out my phone, opening up the calendar. I mumble to myself, “Let’s see, plumber on Wed, carpet put in on Thursday. Hardwood floor on Monday, but didn’t they call saying they weren’t going to be available until Wed”. HMMMMMM..

Me : “You know what, we have this weird gap from Friday to Tuesday, let me check airplane tickets”.

Let’s see, LAX to YVR, search.

$238/person, roundtrip?! What?

Me : “Go ask for time off at work, we are going to the Olympics!”

Michelle : “You serious?!”

Me : “YEP”.

Day 1 : What better way to start off, watching hockey in Canada.
Hockey

Day 2 : We line up early to see some jewelry. And what is more Canadian than this? Curling is up.
Touching Gold

Day 3 : Seeing the flame and catching a concert. Along the way, got the biggest surprise of the game.
The city is on fire

Day 4 : Soaking in the atmosphere.

Before and some progress

I am not kidding when I said we have work to do. We are literally working on the house. I think it’ll be fun to chronicle the metamorphosis.

This is the before photos.

Here are photos for some of the demolition we did.

Meat in a tube form : Wurstküche

Posted by ming on September 2nd, 2009

I like to eat meat as much as the next dude. Meat in a tube form is even better. No cutting, no utensils, much faster. I’ve always wanted to visit Wurstküche. Unfortunately it is in downtown LA. Took me a while to convince Michelle to go all the way downtown to just have “hot dog”. Well worth the trip.

Kind of hard to findThis place is hard to find. Streets here can be one way, so if you miss it, you have to drive all the way around. Allow ample time to get here.

Line out the doorThis place is popular. EXPECT a line. We got here at 12:10 and the restaurant opens at 12. We heard there was already a long line 15 minutes before it opened.

Library TowerSee, very close to downtown.

Goods on displayFinally getting excited. All the different types of sausages on display.

On the grillAfter you order, you dog is slapped onto the grill. Nice.

Seating areaThe seating area is like a beer hall.

beerWhat’s most impressive is all the beer available. We got a cherry flavored beer (Echt Kriekenbier) and a dark beer (Koestritzer Schwarzbier).

beer on tapLook at all the beer available on tap! WOW!

bench seatingThis row of seats were completely packed by the time our food came.

FOODAbout 5~10 minutes (maybe much longer, since we were already downing the beer, can’t really remember) after we ordered, here is our food.

SausageMichelle got the bockwurst (left), I got the kielbasa (right). There are a few toppings you can choose from. What strike us first when you bite into it is the crunch of the casing. Definitely a “snap” to it. The sausage is almost crispy. Both sausages were excellent. The sausage is not too salty, very juicy and flavorful with a hint of smokiness from the grill. So good. *drool*

FriesFries here are also very good. Very crispy on the outside. The two dipping sauces (out of 10 you can choose from) we got happens to be very good. The pesto mayo is a must and the chipotle ketchup adds some bite to the fries.

So it is worthwhile go downtown just for “hot dog” and beer. :)

Really thick toast

Posted by ming on August 27th, 2009

We really like toast that is a bit thicker than normal. Finally we stumble onto a place that would sell us a complete un-cut loaf so we can DIY.

Big loaf of bread
This loaf of bread was cut into three “slices”. OH YEAH.

Michelle and her bum arm

Posted by ming on August 19th, 2009

Being the workaholic that she is, this day was bound to happen. Michelle’s arm actually hurt enough for her to give acupuncture a try. Acupuncture is one of those very odd things where most people believe it works but are afraid to try it. Michelle is no exception. Of course she is scared stupid of the whole idea and I have to go with her.

Her arm is the catalyst, but the source of her problem is actually her back. She is feeling better after the treatment. Even though the treatment did not hurt and seem to have worked, she is still afraid to go. Yes, that makes sense in MichelleWorld.

Anyone who has ever been in Michelle’s car knows that she is not shy about using the gas pedal. We all knew this day would come.

Something wrong officer?

If you are ever in front of Michelle, get out of the way.
